When the Stuart king James II fled in 1688, Prince William of Orange and his wife Mary were brought over from Holland and crowned king and queen. They were succeeded by Mary's sister Anne who had no children. And so, when Queen Anne died in 1714 it was expected that James II's son who was Anne's half-brother would become king as James III. This did
not happen; but instead, the Elector of Hanover was crowned as King George
I. The supporters of the Stuarts were shocked at this and in the following
year, 1715, they took up arms. |
