"Thinking Skills is an approach to learning aimed at improving pupils’ critical thinking in a variety of ways. The aim is to teach transferable skills such as how to access and critically analyse information, provide reasoned arguments, look for bias and distortion, communicate effectively, listen to and respect other views and most importantly to reflect on what has been learned and how it has been learned. Thinking Skills approaches have been piloted in Northumberland since 1995, originally in the Humanities but more recently in other curriculum areas, resulting in a marked improvement on raising standards and exam results. The approach has now been adopted successfully in many other parts of the country. The importance of Thinking Skills has been recognised by the government and they are being promoted by OFSTED inspection process guidelines."
