There are many fine 19th-Century and older buildings, particularly in Market Street, Cockshaw and Hencotes. Tanning, glove and hat making developed as local industries. By the early 20th Century, the traditional industries had been replaced by new ones and the town became much cleaner. The railway provided a vital link to Newcastle. |
