The Border Library, located in the Old Gaol, houses the Butler Trust Collection. This is a private collection put together over many years by Bill Butler, once Director of the Northumbria Tourist Board. Bill wanted the collection to be used and enjoyed by as many people as possible, and set up the Butler Trust. Tynedale Council currently provides a home for the Collection on behalf of the Butler Trust, and is responsible for access to the information held there. The Collection is made up of books, music scores, photographs and other sources of information about the history, culture and music of the Borders area. It is particularly strong in Northumbrian pipe music and ballads. An Honorary Librarian, Fiona Lockhart runs the Library with assistance from 6 volunteers. Anyone wishing to explore the Collection is welcome. If you have particular interests please contact the Honorary Librarian in advance.
