ABBEY - INTRODUCTION ![]() W3C XHTML 1.0 W3C CSS ![]() |
Hexham Abbey was founded c.674 by St Wilfrid. It was built at the heart of the area of land given to St Wilfrid by Queen Etheldreda. St Wilfrid's biographer, Eddius Stephanus, on writing about the Abbey says ' … we have never heard of its like this side of the Alps.' Only the Anglo Saxon crypt and apse remain to be seen today. Most of the existing church dates from about 1170-1250. The east end was rebuilt in 1860, the nave in 1908. The Abbey acted as the Parish Church for the people of Hexham for much of its' history, and still fulfils that role today.
