Welcome to the market town of Hexham. The streets and buildings you see today tell stories of Hexham and its inhabitants from its beginnings in Anglo-Saxon times to the present day. Here we introduce you to some of these stories, and some of the events of local and national interest that took place here.

There are many fine 19th-Century and older buildings, particularly in Market Street, Cockshaw and Hencotes. Tanning, glove and hat making developed as local industries. By the early 20th Century, the traditional industries had been replaced by new ones and the town became much cleaner. The railway provided a vital link to Newcastle.

Hexham Abbey

An increase in population lead to a boom in domestic, commercial and ecclesiastical buildings, including the construction of the nave of Hexham Abbey. Since then Hexham has continued to develop as a residential and tourist centre.
